Micron Honored for Supporting Military Employees

Micron’s site in Folsom, Calif. and one of our local managers recently received awards for supporting our military employees from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

During an award ceremony on May 7, ESGR presented Micron with the Seven Seals Award and Engineering Group Leader Richard Iseger with the Patriot Award. Iseger was nominated for the award by one of his direct reports, Kristoffer Berrien, as a supervisor who is "the epitome of a civilian boss."

Inspiring Tomorrow's Innovators

Micron Foundation joins state leaders to recognize outstanding educators

Sparking passion in the next generation of innovators begins in the classroom, where educators play a giant role. The Micron Foundation support educators who inspire and help students connect math and science with their everyday world, including three deserving Idaho teachers who recently received the Governor's Industry Award for Notable Teaching in Science (GIANTS), which includes a $2,500 cash prize. 

Additionally one teacher from each educational level received an Honorable Mention award with a cash prize of $500. Student councils that nominated winners and honorable mention recipients will receive a $500 and $100 cash stipend, respectively. 

The GIANTS program was initiated by the Office of the Governor and is sponsored by the Science and Technology Roundtable. As a coalition member, the Micron Foundation is one of the several technology and education organizations in Idaho that support the GIANTS program.

State Resolutions Adopted to Honor Steven R. Appleton

During the last few weeks, the states of Idaho, Utah and Virginia approved resolutions honoring our former Chairman and CEO Steve Appleton. Each state resolution acknowledged Steve for his contributions to their communities, professionally and personally. 

“We truly appreciate the thoughtfulness of each of the state governments proposing these resolutions,” said Micron Idaho Government Affairs Manager Mike Reynoldson. “It means a lot to the Micron family to have Steve’s legacy – as a husband, father, businessman and philanthropist – remembered throughout our Idaho, Utah and Virginia communities.”

Micron Vice President Dean Klein Honored by FIRST Robotics for Inspiring Students

Micron Vice President of Memory System Development Dean Klein was honored with the 2012 Woodie Flowers Finalist Award for mentoring and motivating students in the discipline of engineering and design during the 2012 FIRST® Robotics regional competition in Utah, March 16-17.

This prestigious award recognizes mentors who lead, inspire, and empower using excellent communication skills while also challenging the students to be clear and succinct in recognizing the value of communication.

“For more than a decade, Dean has been an instrumental part of Micron’s K-12 programs – from volunteering in the classroom to kick-starting science fairs as ‘Mr. Science’,” said Micron K-12 Program Manager Laurie Anderson. “His involvement as a FIRST Robotics mentor is inspiring students to pursue careers in the fields of science, engineering, technology and math. He’s truly engineering the future for the next generation of scientists and engineers.”

The Mountain View High School “Bullbots” team, from Meridian, Idaho, nominated Klein for the award and submitted an essay describing how he helped them understand the challenges, opportunities, and satisfaction involved in the discipline of engineering and design. Klein has been a mentor with the Mountain View Bullbots team for the past five years. Read the Bullbots interview with Klein about his experience with the team.

Micron Foundation and Volunteers Support Idaho Public Television

Idaho Public Television (PBS) is hosting its annual “Festival” fundraiser telethon during March 3-18 to help pay for programs and Idaho productions that viewers enjoy throughout the year. Micron encourages team members to positively impact our community by volunteering time, energy, and resources. On Wednesday, March 14, the Micron Foundation and nearly 15 Micron volunteers will be supporting the telethon by taking pledges and donations over the phone during on-air programming breaks.

Encouraging Female High School Students in Virginia to Pursue Engineering Careers

Since 2008, the Micron Foundation has been supporting the Chantilly High School in Virginia through annual donations, job shadow days and tours of Micron’s site in Manassas, and mentor volunteers. Their engineering academy was recently featured by NBC 4 (Washington ) in a story highlighting the success of their program to encourage female students to pursue careers in engineering. In the first year of the program, 135 female students participated and they are running at approximately an 83-percent graduation rate off to engineering schools.

Steve Appleton (1960-2012)

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Appleton, Micron Chairman and CEO, passed away this morning in a small plane accident in Boise. He was 51. Our hearts go out to his wife, Dalynn, his children and his family during this tragic time.

Steve’s passion and energy left an indelible mark on Micron, the Idaho community and the technology industry at large.

College of Western Idaho Receives $2.5 Million from Micron Foundation

Today, College of Western Idaho (CWI) was presented a $2.5 million gift from the Micron Foundation that will support the funding needed to complete the renovation of a $16.9 million new Professional Technical Education Center in Nampa, Idaho. In recognition of the generous donation, the College announced that the new Center will bear the Micron name.

“We’re very proud to invest in CWI and this new technical center,” noted Dee Mooney, Micron Foundation Executive Director. “The Micron Foundation is committed to advancing technical education and supporting the communities where our employees live and work. This gift supports both missions as we work together with the College of Western Idaho to build on its reputation of excellence and attract a new generation of professionals to the Treasure Valley.”

U.S. Ambassador Visits Micron Israel

U.S. Ambassador Daniel B. Shapiro and his staff recently visited Micron’s fabrication facility in Israel. Site Director Yonathan Wand and Fab Manager Shmulik Perez provided Ambassador Shapiro with an overview of the site’s history and involvement in the community.

During a tour of the production area, the Ambassador remarked on the site’s impressive achievements and expressed his interest in the site’s community activities. In addition to his visit with Micron, Ambassador Shaprio visited a few other U.S. subsidiary high-tech companies in the Kiryat Gat industrial zone which included Intel and Hewlett Packard.

Micron Team Members Donate Turkeys & Hams to Idaho Families

In a Micron tradition that goes back for decades, team members recently donated 1,087 turkeys and 507 hams to families through The Idaho Foodbank. Since 2001, the donations have totaled to more than 18,000 turkeys and hams for Idaho families.

“During the holidays, it's a great time for Micron and our team members to give something back to the community especially during these challenging economic times,” said Dee Mooney, Executive Director of the Micron Foundation. “Today’s ham and turkey donation by our team members to The Idaho Foodbank is one of our favorite traditions to enrich the community.”

The Idaho Foodbank President and CEO Karen Vauk helps Micron team members unload donated turkeys and hams into the Foodbank warehouse.
